When to use ‘Each’ and when to use ‘Both’

Here is another couple (yes, ‘couple’ is a unit so is singular!) of English words which have been known to cause confusion.

Let’s have a look at how they should be used:

·         We each received a piece of cake.

·         We both received a piece of cake.

In the first sentence we learn that the recipients of the cake had one piece each, but the second sentence it tells us that they had one slice between them and had to share it – and that could be seriously annoying if it was your favourite cake.

·         We each decided to take the dogs for a walk and were delighted when we met up unexpectedly.

·         We both decided to take the dogs for a walk so knew that they could play together.

In the example above you’ll see that in the first sentence it was a surprise when the dog-walkers met up as they had decided – separately – to take the pooches out.  In the second sentence they’d got together to discuss giving the dogs a run together.

·         Please give them each a diamond ring for their extraordinary contributions.

·         Please give them both a diamond ring for their extraordinary contributions.

Hoo boy – now there will be some arguments!  In the first sentence they each receive this most welcome gift; whereas in the second sentence what on earth will happen to the ring?  Perhaps they will sell it and then split the difference.  Where is King Solomon and his wisdom when you need him?

·         Each of the chickens laid an egg today.

·         Both of the chickens laid an egg today.

In these two sentences it’s clear that all of the chickens in the first sentence – maybe there are 20 of them – have earned their keep; but in the second sentence the two chickens laid eggs.

I hope this gives you something to consider when writing your papers, articles, copy or your novel.  Watch this space for the next instalments.
